Have you been asked to speak at a public event? Perhaps you have to pitch an idea at work or give an oral report in class. Regardless of why you are giving the speech, you want it to be worthwhile. Use this advice to make that possible.

It is very important that you display enthusiasm when you are speaking publicly. There is no way that you will get others excited about a topic if it seems like you are bored with it. If the topic is one that is a bit more emotionally driven, you have to show them that you care.

Know your surroundings. Take a few moments when you arrive to acquaint yourself with your surroundings. If you can arrive early, go to the podium and do a soundcheck before your audience arrives. If you have visual aids, practice using them while you are orientating yourself with your surroundings.

Try to relax before and during your speech. Breathe deeply and remember that you are well-prepared, so you have nothing to worry about. Some say that it helps to envision your audience members in their underwear to help you relax. This sort of visualization can help you look and feel more relaxed while speaking.

Know what type of audience you will be talking to. If you can, learn who is going to be in attendance. If possible, greet them as the enter the room and ask their names. You will give off a friendlier vibe by becoming personal with some of the audience.

Make sure that the beginning of your speech is a moment to relax. Greet and address your audience. Then pause for three seconds. This gives them a chance to focus on you, while you get a moment to transform your nervous energy into enthusiasm for the material you are about to deliver.

Practice some deep breathing to help you through your speech. Before you start to speak, breath deeply a few times and then exhale. Breathe in for a count of four, and then breathe out for a count of five. Do this approximately five times to feel a difference in how calm you feel.

Never tell the audience that youre sorry for being nervous or any other issue that comes up. Chances are they didnt even notice in the first place. Even if they do, coming across as lacking in confidence detracts from your position of authority on your speech that you are making.

The more public speaking you do, the more comfortable you will become. To help you gain the experience you need, offer to go to your local high school to share your knowledge with others. Most teachers are happy to have executives visit their class to give their students a chance to hear about different careers.

Take the time to research other important speeches. The internet has a wealth of recorded speeches so that you can observe how they do it. Focus on the qualities that you liked in their speech and emulate them. Look for qualities such as their ease in speaking, their humor and how they capture the attention of the audience.

Exercise

If you are nervous about speaking to a group, consider a visualization exercise that can help you significantly. Instead of looking out at your audience as people to impress, imagine that they are sitting there in this underwear. It is impossible to be intimidated by people dressed in such a way, so you will be calmer to speak.

You might be called upon to speak in public in many different situations. Public speaking can be very difficult. However, these simple tips will help if you only remember to apply them. If you speak confidently you will achieve positive results.
